Democracy isn't a spectator sport—it's a continuous, active effort that requires participation. For those of us who believe in unity, collaboration, and progress, fighting for our democratic ideals comes down to two essential, powerful actions: running for office and making sure to vote.
For our local community here in Wicomico County, Maryland, increasing involvement is critical to ensure our voices are heard and our values are reflected in policy.

Wicomico County: Punching Our Weight
Wicomico County, a vital part of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, holds a significant potential that is currently underutilized.
Wicomico's Political Reality
According to recent data (as of 2020), Wicomico County has more registered Democrats than Republicans.
Registered Democrats: Approximately 27,194
Registered Republicans: Approximately 23,646
This majority means that Wicomico has the raw voter numbers to significantly "punch our weight" in local and state elections. However, the true strength of this majority is only unlocked through unity and collaboration. When the majority registers, turns out to vote, and supports qualified candidates who share our vision, we transform potential into political power.
Step Up to Lead: Run for Office
Elections are decided by who shows up—not just to vote, but to run. You, or someone you know, might be the exact leader Wicomico needs. We cannot complain about the choices on the ballot if we aren't willing to step forward and be one of the choices ourselves.
Running for office is the ultimate commitment to democratic change. It's how we ensure that our local school boards, county councils, and state legislative seats are occupied by dedicated, qualified individuals who put people first.
How to Run for Office as a Maryland Democrat
If you've been thinking about getting involved, the Maryland Democratic Party and the State Board of Elections offer resources to help you take the leap.
Understand the Office: Research the specific qualifications (age, residency, filing fee) for the office you want to pursue, whether it’s the County Council, House of Delegates, or the local Central Committee.
File Your Candidacy: You must file a Certificate of Candidacy and pay the required filing fee with the appropriate election office (State or Local Board of Elections).
Establish a Committee: Candidates for State or local office are required to establish an authorized candidate campaign committee and appoint a treasurer before conducting any campaign finance activity.
Financial Disclosure: A Financial Disclosure Form is required for all state and local candidates.
Seek Party Support: Contact the Wicomico County Democratic Central Committee for local guidance, training, and resources. They can provide essential support as you navigate the process.
Resource Tip: Check the official Maryland State Board of Elections website for the most current deadlines, forms, and qualifications for all offices.
NOTE: For 2026 Elections – the primary due date is February 24, 2026.
✅ The Non-Negotiable: Register and Vote
You don't have to be a candidate to be a hero for democracy—you just have to vote. For our majority in Wicomico County to be effective, every registered Democrat must make it a priority to vote in every election, from the Presidential race down to the County Council and judicial races.
Register: Make sure your registration is current, especially if you've moved.
Educate: Study the candidates and their platforms, not just the party label.
Vote: Show up to the polls, whether it's by mail, early voting, or on Election Day.
Democracy is not protected by wishing for change, but by working for it. Start by checking your registration status today, and if you have the passion, consider being the leader Wicomico County has been waiting for.
